[NI0203] Mary or "May" Toleman was the 11th child and second youngest of Margaret Delany and Joseph Toleman. Margaret's father was John Delany (1794-1876) and her mother Bridget Dun ne (1812-1884). John Delany was born at New Hill, Ireland. He was the son of John Delany and Catherine Flinn. In 1842, aged 49, he married Bridget Dunne in the parish Moyne, Tipperary. Bridget was the daughter of Martin Dunne (farmer) and Margaret Meagher. Both families lived near Thurles, Co Tipperary. Moyne is about 7 miles north east of Thurles; and south east of Templemore. John and Bridget had 7 children in a 10 year period, only one did not survive (Johannah ). They arrived in Port Fairy in 1855, with six children - Patrick (13 ), Catherine (12),Margaret (11), Mary (9), Ellen (3), and John (2). Tom w as born the year they arrived. The Delaney's settled at Rosehill near Grassmere Junction. In 1866 they moved to Nirranda on a selection of some 211 acres. Their children married and settled in the surrounding area. Patrick Delany married Ellen Kilmartin and had 13 children Catherine married James Farrell and had 10 children Margaret married William Toleman and had 12 children:- Bridget, John, William, Joseph, Edmund, Alexander, Margaret, Bridget, Elizabeth, Gertrude, Mary (known as May, married James Timms), and Thomas.
