[NI1132] Dad, John and his brothers Pat, Jim and Tom all played football, mainly for Warrion F.C. Dad also played for St, Brendans and Irrewarra. The girls were top netballers locally. They all attended dances in Colac, the pavillion at Coragulac, the Warrion, Alvie & Beeac Halls. They all had getogethers quite often with the Cororooke Delaney's [M ck & Bill] and the O'Connors at Alvie. They sang around the piano as most of the girls could play by ear. St. Brendan's Church was a great and important social meeting place with all cousins and friends getting together. All of the above attended St. Brendans Catholic School at Coragulac, which was the centre of the life of the 3rd and 4th generations. At the Farrell farm on the Glen Alvie Estate - "Grassy Meadows" - [subdivision No 58 & 62] milking was done by hand, with up to 100 cows. All children were expected to milk, feed calves & pigs, with skimmed milk, as cream was separated and sent to the factory at Warrion. Ice blocks were produced at this factory in Warrion, after wholemilk was delivered in 12 gallon cans to the Colac Dairying Company depot at Cororooke. Electric milking machines were introduced to the farm in 1952, along with the Ferguson tractor and FX Holden. The Clydesdale horse Judy was used to "skin" the onions until the late 60's. A skinner used to go under the onion roots and loosen them. It was a metre long blade. Thomas Farrell served in the 2nd World War, with the A.I.F. The farm was sold in 1971, as John and Estelle retired to Colac and later to Geelong West. Their sons Roger, John and Lawrence chose teaching, banking and nursing as careers. In 1927 a Nash Car was worth 700 Pounds and a milking cow was worth 3 Pounds, 7 shillings and sixpence. Up to the 1930's pasture seed was broadcast by hand. Jack, Agnes & Peg Farrell rode to school as a threesome on Daisy the horse, 6 miles return. In 1927 the Convent & Presbytery was built at Coragulac. St. Brendans pupils carried bricks from the main road to the building site during school time. John Farrell [Grandfather] was a member of the Hibernian Society - so wore a sash at Mass.
