[NI1186] [submitted by Mary Lineen] John was 17 when his father died, and we believe he worked in a butcher 's shop in Garvoc. He married Mary Josephine Farrell, in the Catholic Chu rch in Terang, in Feburary 1900. Their first child, James was born at Garv oc. John and Mary purchased a farm at Alvie, in 1904. The farm was call ed "Athlone", was situated on the Dreeite Road, with land on either si de on the road. They milked cows and grew onions and potatoes. Their nei ghbours and life long friends were Delahunty's, Ilett's and Mahood's. Our memories of grandfather are mainly of his later years. During his li fe we do know, that he suffered from T.B., and went to Deniliquin, NS W, to recuperate. He was musical and played the violin, and loved telli ng stories and dressing up for the grandchildren. Mary Josephine was greatly loved by her children, for her gentle mother ly qualities. With her large family, her work was mainly in the home. Th ere are many stories of her cdooking abilities, trying to keep ahead of t he growing lad's appetities; hiding the cakes in the piano, but to no avai l! She took an interest in crocheting and tatting, and we still have so me loverly examples of her work. The family home "Athlone", was burnt do wn twice, and it must not have been easy for Grandma, with the lo ss of so much family memorbilia, etc. Her married sister, Annie Hogan lived nearby. Annie died in 1928. Kat e, her unmarried sister, lived with them in her retiring years, until s he went to St. John of God, Ballarat, where she died in 1952. There were many visits from the Terang relatives, the O'Connor's and t he Farrell's and their children.
