[NI0880] Submitted I remember my mother coming into my room one morning when I was about 8 ye ars old, to tell me that her mother had died. She was crying. I did not ha ve very much contact with Mary Josephine Delaney but I felt sad becau se my mother was sad. I was always curious about my grandfather Dennis Del aney. Mum did not speak of her father and when I asked about him she sa id that he had died. He remained a mystery to all of us until we finally m ade contact with his family in 1978. My mother had a close relationship with all of her sisters. She had a part icularly close relationship with Vera her younger sister. By way of descri bing the closeness my brother Desmond related this story that was shared b etween the Anderson (Vera¿s) and Galley (Mollie¿s) household. Vera, Charli e, Harry and Mollie were not averse to having the occasional bet with a lo cal SP bookie. Apparently the story goes that they started to accrue a de bt to this local SP bookie and discussed a way of paying off their debt. V era, Mollie, Charlie and Harry decided they would bet whatever spare mon ey that they had on a particular horse that was racing that day. Charlie a nd Harry would be charged with the responsibility of putting the bet on. T here is some confusion whether it was the "Trots" or the "Races" for tho se who understand the intricacies of gambling options. This fact doesn¿t r eally matter however the outcome does. Vera and Mollie waited at home wi th the children and listened to the radio and were filled with delight a nd were ecstatic, when as they listened to the race they heard their hor se win. Apparently the odds were very good and knew with such a win that a ll their troubles were over. Unbeknown to Vera and Mollie, Charlie and Harry had met an old friend o ut at the track. This friend told them the surest bet of the day. Th ey in their wisdom decided to place all of the money they had on the tip t hat they had received at the track, believing it to be a more reliable be t. This "sure thing" did not win. You can only imagine what wailing and gn ashing of teeth occurred when Charlie and Harry finally returned home wi th the news of their changed plans and their loss. The Delaney sisters met regularly in the city for lunch. When we were wi th them we wondered how they managed to hear what each other was saying be cause more often than not there would be more than one sister speaki ng at the same time. It was bedlam. During the school holidays one of our favourite outings was heading into t he city and having lunch at Hyde Park with all of our auntie¿s and cousin s. We had fun chasing the pidgeons, while some of the more daring cousi ns went swimming in the Archibald Fountain. Other memories of my childhood of our extended family was our weekly visi ts to our cousins home in Crow¿s Nest to watch the Sunday movie on T V. It was the home of Vera and Charlie Anderson. My father was an employ ee of Charlie for a period of time so we had a lot of contact with the m. We occasionally had picnics down at Lane Cove National Park with a ll of the extended family. Also many a trip to Curl Curl beach on the ba ck of the Anderson truck. My mum was terribly upset at Vera¿s sudden premature death. Vera was on ly 58 years old when she died. Vera was so lively, full of life and h ad a wonderful sense of humour. My mum loved being with Vera and laugh ed a lot about all the antics that Vera got up to. My mum then had to cope with the sudden death of Harry her husband. I don ¿t have much memory of my mum expressing her feelings much. She was a pers on who just seemed to accept whatever happened and went on with her life. My mum went on a Queensland holiday with her sister, Annie and her husba nd Baden Arkell after Harry¿s death. Mum would get Annie to make clothes f or her. Annie who was the eldest sister died some years later and my mum was al so very sad. Annie was the dressmaker of the family she obviously follow ed in her own mother¿s footsteps. Nellie was then mum¿s only surviving sister and my mum took every opportun ity to spend time with her. Nellie moved up to Katoomba so this was al so an opportunity for my mum to have little holidays away from her own hom e. When Nellie died my mum was the only surviving Delaney girl and she fe lt real sad. She missed her sisters. She died after a brief illness hea rt related 10 May 1987 on Mother¿s Day. Maggie Galley daughter of Mollie
