[NI2486] Private William James Murnane Number: VX22611 Rank: Private Unit: 2/29 INF BN Service: Army Conflict: 1939-1943 Private William James Murnane was on of over 2000 Allied prisoners of w ar held in the Sandakan POW camp in north Borneo, having been transferr ed there from Singapore as a part of B Force. The 1494 POW's that ma de up B Force, were transported from Changi on 7th July 1942 on board t he tramp ship Ubi Maru, arriving in Sandakan Harbour on 18th July 1942. P rivate Murnane, ages 37 years, died as a prisoner of the Japanese on 26 th January, 1943.
