[NI0039] Page 42. Joseph TOLEMAN. Garvoc. is a son of the late William Toleman,a reside nt of the colony fronm1841 until 1878, the year of his death. His came o ut on the ship "Gilmore", spent a year in Melbourne, seven years in stati on life at Mortlake, Koort Koort Nong and Minjah stations. In 1851 he leas ed a dairy farm from Mr Joseph Ware, staying on it for five years. At th at time cheese was sold at 3s6d per lb. In 1856 he purchased land at Mortl ake and carried on farming until 1873 and then selected land in Donald, wh ere he remained until his death in 1878. His son, Mr Joseph Toleman settl ed in Garvoc, in 1864 and has resided there ever, since. In 1876 he commen ced store, and hotel keeping and in 1879 purchased land in the township a nd erected a store on it, He was the postmaster for six years and is at pr esent deputy registrar for the district of births, deaths and, marriage s, Mr.J.ToIeman bred Blackthorn, the winner of the Great National Steeplec hase at Melbourne in 1882.
