[NI1184] Submitted by Mary Lineen [submitted by Mary Lineen] Elizabeth was also known as Lizzie or Betty. She was born at Garvoc in 1903. Her older brother James died later that y ear. In 1904, the family moved to Alvie. She was educated firstly at Alvie, St. Brendan's in Coragulac, and at t he Mercy Convent in Colac, where she was a boarder. She was a great story teller and also wrote poetry. As a young woman, she enjoyed organizing te nnis-parties at "Athlone", followed by sing-a-longs around the piano in t he evenings. She also organized picnics by horse drawn vehicles, and grou ps attending district Balls. She helped in the house, and with milking et c., until the mid 1920's, when a career in nursing was taken up. As a go od worker and popular nurse, she was chosen "Miss Charity Queen" in Warrna mbool. Her sister Margaret and cousin Peg McGuire, were her attendant s. Unfortunately, whilst horse riding, she was thrown off and fractured h er skull, ending that career. In 1929, Elizabeth married Francis Linee n, and farmed at Cororooke for about 6 years, during the height of the dep ression. Five children were born there: Mary, Margaret Therese, Claire, a nd twins Elizabeth Ann and Frances Judith. The twins were born after Fran cis entered the Austin Hospital, Heidleberg, suffering from tuberculosi s. He died in December 1935. Betty spent the following year in hospita l, with T.B. herself. Leo O'Connor, her brother, had come to live with h er in Heidleberg after she sold the farm. Now her sister Katie came to lo ok after the children, and when Katie married, her sister Margaret took ov er. An epidemic of poliomyelitis broke out, and the children were se nt to the country to the grandparents at Alvie. Daylesford or Hepburn Springs was recommended as a good place to live f or health reasons, so the Lineen family lived there from 1938-1952. Bet ty was on of the first women in the area to wear slacks, which she thoug ht more practical for riding a bike about Daylesford. Having suffered a n ervous breakdown, she decided to move back to Cororooke, and later to Cola c, where she died in 1983, She was a very devoted Catholic, and her fai th stood her in good stead though the years.
