[NI0248] Submitted F~ _ When my grandfather, Joseph Toleman died, Dad was about 17 years old and r ode his horse all the way from Victoria to Queensland, to seek his fortun e. He ended up in a very historic part of Brisbane, Early Street, and beca me chauffeur to a Judge Real who lived in a beautiful Queenslander house ( which is now an historic building open to the public). Dad was proud ly in charge of the carriage and pair of horses and it was there he m et my mother Louisa Allendorf, who lived nearby and was learning to be a s eamstress at the Judge's house. They were married in St Stephens Cathedral in Brisbane and my two older br others, Edmund and Thomas Stanley, were born in Coorparoo and then the fam ily all returned to Victoria. Dad had a butcher shop in Birchip and Mum continued her beautiful sewing f or their growing family as Margaret, Gladys, myself, Louise, Joseph, Ma ry and John were born. We were a big, active family but Dad was such a so ft hearted and caring man that he was always bringing home more mout hs to feed or someone down on their luck to let sleep on the veranda for t he night, so when we woke up sometimes we never knew who would be at the t able or singing outside as they sobered up. During the depression when some unemployed were sent to work in the count ry for the dole, Dad was always generous with any extra meat he could spa re from the shop and Mum would bake extra for some of the workers that we re housed nearby, as she was worried about them being away from their fami lies. She particularly treasured some beautifully embroided handiwork th at the wives of these men sent back to her with thanks. When I think of it now and remember my mother always being so ready to he lp others in spite of her workload, it was all part of how she lived her C atholic religion I suppose; but saying the decades of the rosary every nig ht was certainly something we all tried to gallop through. Apparently we u sed to say "pray for us, pray for us" so quickly, that some people thought we were actually saying "horse racing, h orse racing". Sometimes on our schools holidays, we would all go down to Camperdow n, to our grandmother Margaret Toleman (nee Delaney). She was just a litt le lady, but could really keep all of us lively ones under control. Dad's great love, apart from Mum, was horses and he trained some for the c ountry racing and even one tat went into the big Melbourne league aft er he sold it. He taught us all to ride bareback and the only concessi on to the girls was that we were allowed to sit on a blanket. The other great passion in the house, apart from following the races, w as cards: which we played with vigor and long into the night, as no-one w as allowed to go to be until we were all square again. Even now, when so me of the Tolemans get together, the neighbours must know they are in f or a long noisy night, when they hear the table being cleared and the car ds come out. When I was 17, I went to nursing training at the Bendigo Base Hospital, wh ich I enjoyed very much. (In 1978 we went to the Delaney reunion and I m et two ladies there that I knew in Bendigo, but did not realize they we re in our clan - a lovely surprise) One day I was catching a train back to Bendigo, when a handsome young sold ier asked if he could carry my bag. I sat with him in the "dog box" ev en though I had a first class ticket, and found out his name was Bart Fava loro. He was heading back to Bendigo on leave and to help in the family b akery. He says that I was reading my book upside-down all the way ho me - and maybe I was because the rest is history and we were married in t he Hamilton Catholic Church. Our daughters Margaret, Gaye, Elizabeth and Anne were all born in Bendi go an we used to visit Dad and Mum in Hamilton, where they now live d. It was great for our girls to meet up with assorted family members, de pending who came home for Christmas. The card nights continued unabated b ut Bart had got more cunning over the years and managed to escape to b ed as early as he could. Bart and his family were Italian, so he learn ed many things about Aussie families (especially the Delaney/Toleman's), a nd I learned about Italy and how to cook spaghetti, though in my many visi ts to Italy, I have never mastered the language. After a few years in Shepparton in a cake shop with Bart's brother Jo e, we moved to East Bentleigh in Melbourne and bought our own busines s. Bart was a great pastry cook and cake decorator, creating many beautif ul cakes over the years, including one for Don Chipp, M.P. Our eldest daughter Margaret did nursing at St. Vincent's Hospital in Melb ourne and midwifery in Launceston, before going to N.T. and becoming a nur sing sister at the Health Clinic on a vast cattle station, Victoria Riv er Downs, N.T. There she met her future husband, Lindsay McLean and marri ed on the station, where all the guests had to fly, drive or ride hors es to attend. Bart carried the wedding cake on his knee all the way fr om Melbourne. Marg became a nurse practitioner in remote Health Centre s, delivered countless - mainly aboriginal - babies, and was recently pres ented with an award by the Chief Minister of N.T., for her work in remo te nursing care. Our daughter Gaye, also did nursing at St. Vincent's, and went with MA rg to work at Darwin Hospital. She loved nursing in the north and met a S cotsman named Peter Robertson, who had driven overland from Britain, and l anded in Darwin to work and to continue traveling. Well again the re st is history, they drove south to Melbourne for the wedding in East Bentl eigh, before setting finally settling in the Gold Coast Hinterland, aft er working in Canberra, Gladstone, Palm Island and Yamba. They have constr ucted many roads, bridges and sub-divisions through their civil constructi on company. Our daughter Anne was a teacher in Melbourne when we went to Marg anf Lind say's wedding in N.T., and there met her future husband Alan Gitsham, w ho followed her home to Melbourne, where they married in East Bentleig h. They have lived on the Sunshine Coast for many years, initially runni ng their own butcher shop, but now Ann specializes in Natural Medicine, Ho meopathy and massage, and runs her own business. While our daughter, Liz was teaching in Sale, Victoria, she met her futu re husband Steve Hallows, and a couple of years later moved to Queensla nd and married in the garden of our home in Beenleigh, as Bart and I had a lready moved north by then. Over the years Liz taught art aNd did some beautiful painting and photogra phy, They now live in Houston, Texas, USA, and Liz is writing a book on Handsca pes - Hand Analysis Theory and Psychological Types. In 1999 I was presented with an award by the Bishop of Brisbane for my lo ng term service to St. Vincent de Paul. I had enjoyed it immensely and ha ve tried to pass the importance of volunteering in the community, to my fa mily the way I learned for my ancestors. We are very proud of our granddaughter and six grandsons who live around A ustralia and in the U.S.A.. They are all happy and successful across a ra nge of industries, including Information Technology, Law Enforcement, Spor t, Animal Husbandry, Psychology and Electrical. It was an exciting ti me in 2000 when Adam Gitsham represented Australia at the Olympic Gam es in the Running Target Shooting Team and performed very well. We are also delighted to introduce our two great granddaughters, Josie a nd Jarita into the family and are sure that the clan, with all the new mem bers in the other families over the years as well, is in very good hands f or the future.
