[NI0058] James Farrell (b1831) was the third child of Thomas Farrell and Anne Costelloe. The other children were Mary (b 1826)m Andrew (b 1829), John (b 183 3), and Patrick (b1835) The Farrells were from County Kilkenny, Ireland. They lived in a small townland called Ballanvalley, in the parish of Kilmacahill, located 15 miles north-east of Kilkennny City. James emigrated to Australia aboard the "Balnaguith", leaving Plymouth, En gland on 14th July, 1855, and arriving in Portland, Victoria on the 29th October 1855, as an assisted immigrant. The term assisted immigrant refers to those who had all or part of their fare to Australia, paid by the Government, under the Immigration Schemes. Private employers nominated individual migrants to come to Victoria, and in turn received subsidies for this, as was the case with James Farrell. James was employed by a Mr. Henry Munro, on the run "Crawford", located on the Crawford River, near Hotspur as an Agricultural labourer. (the property is now a well known winery). He was 24 years old, could read and write, an was Catholic. He started work on 2nd November, 1855, for a term of 3 months at 35 Pounds. From1855- 1864, there are no concrete details of where, nor what James Farrell did, but probably remained an agricultural labourer until he was ready to buy his own land. James Farrell married Catherine Delaney on 3rd November, 1864, at Warrnambool's Roman Catholic Church. James was 33 years old and Catherine w as 21 years old. The marriage was officiated by W. Slattery in the presence of Margaret Delaney and James Brennan. James and Catherine both registered their residences at Purnim. In 1865 Bridget was born at Purnim, sadly she only lived to 1868, dying at 2 years old. In 1866, James Farrell with the Delaney family, selected lane at Nirranda. Three allotments were taken out in the names of Patrick Delaney, Margaret Delaney (later Toleman) and James Farrell. Allotments 76B and 76C we re 105 acres and allotment 76 was 106 acres. Regular payments of 5 Pounds and 5 Shillings were to be made from October 1866. The final payment of 64 Pounds was made to the land office in Melbourne on 31st January, 1871, and freehold was granted. Shire Books from Warrnambool : 1874-18 80, record James Farrell as Freehold owner of a house and 105 acres in t he parish of Nirranda. Land title records show the land being transferred for loans in 1872, but this was transferred back to James Farrell in 1877. In 1880, James is listed as Labourer living in a house on 1/2 acre of land at Garvoc, owned by Joseph Toleman (his brother-in-law, married to Margaret Delaney). Hearsay via Delaney cousins tell us the James Farrell h ad "troubles" with William Ardlie, as well known solicitor from Warrnambool. An assumption could be a loan problem, as it was quite usual for solicitors to lend money at this time, men such as William Ardlie were willing to lend money, but then commonly charges 20-30% interest rate to compensate for the high risks involved. On the other hand, James may have decided to sell up his land and consolidate his financial position. By this stage, 8 further children were born, Anne b. 1867, Woodford; Mary b. 1874, Nirranda; James b. 1876, Nirranda; Michael b. 1878, Nirranda and Patrick Joseph b, 1880. Patrick was the only child registered with a second name, perhaps this was in honour of Joseph Toleman, on whose land the Farrells now lived. Shire Directories shows the Farrells living with the Tolemans until 188 2. In 1883, James Farrell bought 5 acres of land at Garvoc and stayed there until 1893. In this time the last 2 children born were Catherine 188 2, and Margaret 1877. In 1893, the Farrell's leased land of 225 acres at Garvoc from William Baxter, his son Michael Farrell took over the original 5 acres. In October 1904, James Farrell purchased land from Alfred Footstock. The land was at Cororooke, between Cororook Road and Farrell Road. The farm was called "Bullock Swamp", and it was 83 acres: one rood and 35 perches. All the farming was dairy, which suited the western district. James was said to abhor milking, saying it was "women's work". James died on the 23rd March, 1914 of natural causes, at 83 years old. He had been in Australia for 60 years. Annie Farrell (Hogan) kept contact with the Farrell family in Ireland, and wrote frequently to James's sister Ellen Nolan. Unfortunately none of these letters remain today. At James' death, John and Michael ran "Bullock Swamp" with dairy farming and growing onions. "Athlone" was run by Patrick & Thomas Farrell with dairy farming. His total assets at his death was 14,925 Pounds!! Catherine lived another 10 years until 1925, dying at 82 years. Of their 11 children, 3 had died, Bridget as a child, and Andrew and James in adulthood. Annie married Patrick Hogan, at age 40 and resided in Alvie, there we re no children. Thomas and Michael remained Bachelors. John married Mary O'Leary and had 11 children. Mary married John O'Connor and had 11 children. Patrick married Eliza Carlin and had 8 children. Catherine never married and ran a boarding house. Margaret married Francis O'Keefe and had 6 children. From Roger Farrell: The above James Farrell bought at auction, on 17-10-1902, two allotments of 85 acres each at the subdivision of the Glen Alvie Estate, north of Colac. His sons John and Michael were to run the farm, dairying, onions, potatoes, oats, pigs & maize being the main produce. I believe that James leased the farm to his two sons. My Grandfather John married Mary O'Leary, and lived in an established shepherd's house on the farm, also caring for unmarried Michael. Michael bought a 10 acre paddock, about 5 miles away at Nalingal, some time later, makes me believe that John and Michael never owned to far m. My Dad & Mum, John Farrell & Esther Kucks, bought 1/2 the farm at public auction in approx. 1942. I don't know what happened to the money from the sale, neither did Dad when I used to ask him about it. John Farrell and Mary O'Leary lived as Bullock Swamp, all his life. Mary shifted to Colac when my Mum & Dad were to be married. Michael went to live in a shack on his 10 acres.
